Loudest @ 20Hz

Loudest @ 20Hz

By Marcos Barnes

This may make you laugh.

Imagine a 500wrms system using a single 10" subwoofer being able to out perform and keep up with quite a few 15" subs at a frequency of 20Hz.

Off course the two different vehicles these subs are in and the tuning for each system will determine greatly how they would perform, but I wasn`t expecting such scores from a low powered single 10" sub.

The 15"s box and 20Hz test figures is when box is tuned to 28Hz /29Hz

The Kicker Solo X 12" is tuned to 26Hz

So in my C3 Picasso. I`m finding that it doesn`t actually like 20Hz. Like it`s shit, all those large door panels and large cabin doesn`t seem to be doing it any favours at that frequency even when they are pushed - it`s underwhelming and I`M`O` it`s pathetically bad at how low the 20Hz scores are lol.

Even my Kicker Solo X 12" with 3k isn`t as loud at 20Hz as the Bass Face 10" Indy B with only 500wrms of power, that I`ve recently installed in a VW Polo.

Now I have to admit I think I`ve definitely mucked up on the box as when I purchased the sub, I didn`t take the packaging or manual for it as it was the display model.

Ben Gibbs was there when I bought it and having had experience with this particular sub, he quickly gave me a box suggestion which was 1.2 cu.ft after port n sub displacement, tuned to between 30hz and 35Hz with a port area of around 17.5sq inches as it`s for normal music not playing ultra low. Cheers Ben

Well obviously I`ve mucked up cos having seen what scores it was producing at 25Hz and it`s peak at 20Hz. I had to visually check out it`s actual tuning and it`s tuned to 25Hz / 26Hz!

I guess I can`t resist tuning low. (DOH!)

As you can see the little 10" sub in the VW Polo has the 2nd loudest 20Hz score out of all those subs compared to it`s bigger mates in the C3 Picasso.

Bit of an unfair comparison but for so little power and being a small budget system, it`s very good.

Be interesting to see what happens when all the doors etc are pushed in the Polo.

Anyway.

Thanks go out to:

Mike Woods for supplying us the Sub and Amp.

Ben Gibbs for his input about box design, pity I couldn`t do it properly lol.

I`ll probably reduce the port length if Matt`s not happy with the way it sounds.

And Thank you to anyone else who`s read all this nonsense so far.
